Travels without the motorhome- Telendos, Greece

Trips without the Motorhome- Telendos, Greece June 2011

I thought I ought to make a page  or two about when we travel without the motorhome too. There's so much of the world that we want to see and we've a couple of trips planned.
We have some Greek islands that we love but it's impractical and in some cases , impossible to get there with a motorhome.
One island that we go to every year has no road- there's a donkey and a couple of motorised trucks for moving things round the island and it's so nice not to have cars around.
This is the island of Telendos- we love it and have  had two wonderfully lazy weeks there.

It's not a particularly easy place to get to- from Britain you need a flight to Kos , Greece then a taxi or bus to Mastichari port, then a ferry across to Pothia on Kalymnos, then a bus of taxi to Myrties, then a little boat across to Telendos. It's worth it.

This photo is of Pete sitting in Rita restaurant looking across at Kalymnos. We stay here. The food is wonderful and freshly cooked by Rita and Petroula while Yiannis looks after the customers. Many people like us come back year after year. There's a magic about the place that makes you forget all your worries and makes you calm.

This year, we saw something we've never seen there before. On St John's day, fires are lit along the jetties, small ones for younger people and  a line of huge fires made of brushwood for older brave people. I was told  that  the tradition started by people burning the circlets of flowers that are put on the houses for good luck on  May day. Now it makes a very entertaining, if somewhat nail biting, experience on a warm evening, when everyone gathers and the fires are lit. The young men apparently count down the days until they can jump the fires. As the darkness falls, the flames light the skies and flares and fireworks are set off. I know there were a few nervous parents watching anxiously as their boys leapt over flames sometimes two metres high as they ran along the jetty and dived or jumped into the water.
